Trap is one of the most widely known artists in Arizona. Bursting onto the scene in 2008, he immediately displayed a knack for having a good ear for beats and precise, well-written songs. After dropping a dope mix tape in 2009 called “747 Fly”, he branded himself as a heavy hitter in the Arizona hip-hop music scene. Now, after receiving co-signs from nearly every notable AZ artist, he is back with his second mix tape titled “I Never Sleep”, which is hosted by DJ John Blaze. INS easily separates Trap from the average AZ artist.

One of the first things you notice when listening to this mix tape is Trap’s great presentation and professionalism. The whole sound of this mix tape is top notch and all the songs are very well put together. Nearly all the beats on here knock including “Wipe Me Down” featuring Bass Blak and Tray Gutter. It has a monster beat that could bang in any club and each rapper tries to out swag the next one. Same goes for another standout, the banger “I’m That Guy” by Trap and Wes Cravin. On the song “Gucci” with Lo and Ocean, we get a sick dose of wordplay from Ocean who ends the song perfectly.

Trap keeps the bangers coming with the outstanding track “The Getaway” where he and OTS stand out lyricist/producer Checkin Trapps get raw over a beat with beautiful pianos and a serious low rider sound.  Trap keeps the smooth west coast sound going with the track “This is me” with a guest verse from Arizona O.G. Rocadolla and more hot pianos formulate the perfect blend.

The mix tape’s best tracks are when Trap allows the listener to see a deeper side of the rapper. One of those songs is “Westside Story” where Trap details his reasons for grinding heavy. On the track “Ready or Not”, he gives his insight on the struggles of the African Americans living in America. On the second verse Trap definitely delivers spitting “imagine life on the slaveship/imagine families forced wit separation/hate mentality born in segregation/dancing on stage but solely for entertainment/lookin back its embarrassin/black America this is our inheritance/”

I do think that sometimes on this mix tape, Trap tries to fit into a certain sound and it doesn’t always work. The song “Amazing” sounds just like a Dj Khaled rip-off with a flow that reminds me too much of Rick Ross. “UFO”, while it is an ok song,  just doesn’t fit Trap at all and comes off flat. With so many strong tracks throughout the mix tape, it makes you wish he left it off

Trap has solidified his spot among the best with this tape. With strong tracks from front to end, Trap continues to deliver some of the best music in AZ. From “747 Fly” to “INS”, you see a lot of growth from Trap and you can definitely hear it in the music.

Stern Savage: How to Bully Vol. 2

Stern Savage is the president of ASH Music, and along with CEO, Big Haps, have formed one of Arizona’s up and coming labels. Coming straight out of Philly, he migrated to Arizona in 2005 and has begun to create a name for himself out here. Now, Stern Savage hits us with his premier mix tape on Ash Music called “How to Bully Vol 2”. With this mixtape, Stern proves he is one to be respected in Arizona, and brings you right into Philly sound.

“How to Bully” is a fitting title for this mix tape because that’s exactly how Stern Savage attacks the mic. His furious flow and energy on tracks is contagious and actually saves some of the music on this mixtape. The intro “Return of the Bully” brings you right in and your hear Stern get ferocious over a soulful beat with some dope pianos as he announces his return. We hear Stern at his best on the song “Rollah Ridah” where he brags and boasts over a beat that just bangs hard in the speakers. Dropping punch lines like “I don’t mean apartments when I say I’m pushing units” or “he’ll have three holes in his melon like a bowling ball” makes this a definite banger. Stern drops another dope one with the heater “Straight Balling” boasting a Wayne sample from “Like Father like Son” bringing the perfect energy for the track.

Even though I think there is way too many features on this mixtape, a good amount made for some dope music. One raw collab is “Flatline” where Stern and Reck da Villain spit verses over a beat with some serious horns; Stern once again brings the energy on this track. “About My Paper” is a very nice east coast club banger with Lou Rizzol and Reck da Villain. Another highlight is “Bossman” with Odie and Boss. Boss murders the track showing he is very underrated in AZ. “It’s just the jerk in me, pop a perk or three/and me and Stern spit the flame burn to the third degree/ashes in urn pages turn to the next story/undisputed and undefeated in all categories/I’m on some new shit, fresh out the package/direct and shoot you take 6, actors/”.

One of the best songs I’ve heard in a while out of AZ is the song “I Want it All” ft. Lo and Attlas. Lo laces the perfect hook and delivers a scorching verse with his always hot flow. Attlas comes with a straight asshole verse reminding you of his claim as the king of AZ. Proclaiming that Maryvale should name street after him, he hits you with bars like “now an ice box sits where my heart be/this is my city you don’t like you can leave/but I’m like a Visa everywhere you wanna be/and I stay armed don’t make me roll up my sleeves”.

There are some serious misses on here – “Youuu” and “That’s Her” are just bad songs but Stern Savage manages to give us a consistent project that’s bangs throughout. This is a mix tape that definitely shows his potential to be force nationwide rather than locally. With ASH Music behind Stern, he is poised to make that jump. If you’ve slept on Stern before, “How to Bully Vol 2” will definitely wake you up.

Big Haps is not a newbie to the Arizona hip-hop scene. One of the members of the Phoenix group “Playaz Inc”, Big Haps has been grinding in AZ for many years building a nice independent machine. In 2007, he formed the label “Arizona Stronghold Music” and named his signee, Stern Savage, president in 2010. Since the formation of Ash Music he has released mix tapes and an album for Playaz Inc while building a name for himself. After the release of his 2009 album titled “122 Degrees”, he returns in 2010 with this mix tape called “Wide Body”.
The mixtape starts off with the title track “Wide body” which brings you right into Arizona and allows Big Haps to have the perfect beat to get loose to. The following track “Aint Gonna Like Me” has the best verse from Haps on the whole mix tape, starring Haps, Pennywise, and Attlas as they spit over the Clipse “Popular Demand” instrumental. “Can You Deal With That” has a very dope, old school west coast beat that makes you want to have a bbq at the park, as Big Haps tells the ladies that he’s a rapper and they’re just going to have to “deal with that” lifestyle. “Put in My Pocket” is another hot west coast beat and is another one of the best tracks on the mix tape featuring a very catchy hook.
The stand out track on this mix tape is “Hood Feeling” featuring Mav and Rich Rico. This track possesses a soulful beat and all three emcees talk about the hood feeling in their own perspective with a show stealing verse from Rich Rico – “in Maryvale we stay Prada to the hitops/I’m still hood keep the money in the Nike box/My bitch riding wit a crazy butt/If life’s a bitch then I’m riding wit’ lady luck/”.
The main thing that brings this mixtape down is the inconsistency of the production. Tracks like “Time is Money”, “These Streets”, and “Lock on Your Enemy” all suffer from weak production and sometimes weak hooks. Freestyles aren’t really Haps’ thing and while some come off as dope, others are non-listenable which brings this mix tape down a notch.
At the end of the day, Big Haps drops a solid mixtape that gives a serious old school west coast feeling. It feels like grown-up west coast hip hop and when the beat fits, Big Haps shines. For fans of Big Haps, this mix tape will definitely keep you listening until he drops his next album, but the weak production may turn new listeners off.
